Sinn Féin emphasis on renegotiation of Lisbon playing into hands of defeated Yes side - Tynan

Ted Tynan

The Workers Party have heavily criticised the Sinn Féin tactic of calling for a renegotiation of the Lisbon Treaty, saying that the treaty was irreformable.

Workers Party spokesman Ted Tynan (Cork) said that the Sinn Féin tactic was leaving the door open for those on the Yes side who were still intent on proceeding with the Lisbon Treaty or some variation of it in flagrant disregard for the Irish vote.

“The Lisbon Treaty is a deeply flawed and discredited document which sought to drive Europe further along the integrationist EU Superstate road.  It has been roundly rejected by the Irish people and I am astonished at Sinn Féin’s naïve renegotiation calls. They are playing into the hands of the government and I would call on them to drop their calls for renegotiation and join instead with progressive elements of the No campaign in defending the Irish people’s democratic decision on behalf of all the people of Europe”, said Mr. Tynan.
