Mayfield Workers’ Party representative Ted Tynan has welcomed the decision by Cork City Council to refuse planning permission for a gaming arcade in the area, saying it was a “common sense decision”.

Mr. Tynan, who had objected to the proposed development, said that the last thing Mayfield needed was a gaming arcade, although the area did need more appropriate types of leisure facilities.

“This would have been a totally unsuitable and inappropriate development for the area and did not belong in a residential area. The last thing Mayfield needs is a gaming arcade”, said Mr. Tynan.

“The Mayfield Branch of the Workers’ Party, along with other concerned citizens, objected to this proposal because we were concerned that it would become a magnet for anti-social activity.  We pointed out that there were already several betting shops in the area and a growing number of off-licences and a gaming / amusement centre would only add to the deteriorating leisure and retail mix in the area”.

The Workers’ Party spokesman said that there was an urgent need for more leisure facilities in the area and added that he would continue to fight for proper facilities for young people and adults alike in the area.
